Rotate smoothly to specific angle

I'm making a game with spaceships, where AI does the controlling and player only gives waypoints.

I need to find a way to rotate a spaceship smoothly to the angle I need it to go. I know how to use torque, but any tips how to slow down the rotation before it points to where it needs to? Should I use some kind of counter-torque (and with what formula?) or add drag or something? Spaceships vary in sizes and weights, and some may even have extra engines by the sides, which they perhaps could also use in turning.
