Character controller type actor?

I'm trying to create a specific set of behaviors for a body. Basically I want to make it so that I can tell it to 'move' in any given direction, and if the 'move' direction is going through a solid object it will simply not go through it. The body itself should not respond to gravity or the impact of other objects, i.e. it should just stay where it is.

Currently I'm working on a solution using ray casting but it's a bit tedious. Is there a better way to implement such a thing?

A kinematic body is probably what you are looking for.
