Character Control for Sidescroller

I'd like to control the movement of the player character without having the physics engine do the collisions. I have set up a Collision handler for my character and can detect when he is touching the ground. I set the character's LinearVelocity to zero, but, over time it continues to fall through the geometry that makes up the floor. How do I use the info in the ContactList to properly set the character's position so he doesn't fall through the floor?

The character is still being affected by gravity. Should I also make it stop being affected by gravity too?
