Alternative to Bodies with a large number of fixtures

I have a game concept going. Gameplay video at to get a feel of what I'm talking about! :)

My current design uses a lot of fixtures to do what it does. The problem is generation time of the fixtures. It's fine up to the point of 200 fixtures created, after that it's exponentially worse. I guess it has to do with the reordering of leaf nodes in the AABB tree? (just guessing).

My questions are:
  • Is there anyway to speed the creation up, like using somekind of template. I know all positions of blocks in advance. My thought was to use somekind of pregenerated fixture setup.
  • Is there any better way of doing what I do with a large number of blocks. Each block needs to be checked for mouse over and so on. In an ideal world I would like more than 10000 blocks (that means 10000 fixtures and that is probably not a good idea).
