Platformer Character Control

Hi, recently I read this article:

and I've been thinking about implementing it. But I have some doubts. When you're in the border of a platform, i guess you'll go down because of the circle. Also, when he suggest ray casting for the jumping function, is it really better than just contact detection?

Because I currently use contact detection so I can change the impulse the players takes depending on the surface (i.e. player jusmps less in water floor, and more in elastic floor).
